There is no doubt the Nautilus is one of Patek Philippe's most desirable range for new and aspiring collectors. Almost all the models within the Nautilus range also take pole position amongst the master watch flippers; looking to make a quick return better than the minuscle interest rate provided by their banks and building societies.
In the past, I have called the Patek Philippe Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Gerald Genta's way of telling watch collectors "I own you". The aesthetics of their design appeals to both young and old generations looking for an all occassion watch. Agreeable the Nautilus range will continue to be in demand for time to come.
On my quest to understand the question I have always asked myself and fellow collectors. Is Nautilus the only grail each collector should aim for? Are other ranges a mere distraction? Watch collectors have pondered over this question. Is there life beyond Nautilus with Patek Philippe?
I believe there are new contenders from Patek Philippe that make life beyond Nautilus exciting to look forward to. Those in my circle are aware of my love for GMT and Annual Calendars (Pioneered by Patek Philippe). In fact all my watches have either of this movement; reasons why I gravitate towards them is yet unknown.
The Patek Philippe Annual Calendar 5205G-013 is one of the watches that definitely has the aesthetics of a cool watch, the finness for a gentlemen and can pass with flying colours for dress down or up days. Unfortunately when it was first released at BaselWorld 2018, it didn't get the same attention from watch enthusiasts as the Nautilus 5740G Perpertual Calendar.
The blue gradient dial is one of the main attraction coupled with the scouped lugs known only to this reference but what I love the most about it is the White second hand (I'm a sucker for White second hands). The interest in this reference has continued to grow since launch and getting your hands on one is becoming a matter of waitlist similar to some sport models. I am certain Patek Philippe will be happy to draw some attention away from the Steel Sport models.
Now I can say with some degree of confidence that I could see myself owning a 5205G-013 with the same feeling as owning a Nautlius. No doubt the Nautilus will continue to be in high demand but I see the underdog 5205G-013 slowly becoming a hot watch and must have by collectors and watch afficianiados
I am excited to see a life of collecting beyond Nautilus.
